How to find us

The Pheasants has a frontage on Greenhill, part of the A30, but because of the unusual elevated pavements on Greenhill, it is impossible to park outside at the front. We use our "back" entrance as our main entrance now - this is on Hospital Lane.

Directions for arrival by car:

Coming from the East on the A30 (from Salisbury/Shaftesbury), when you reach Sherborne do not turn left towards the castles, but carry on. Go straight over a mini-roundabout, and you will come to some traffic lights. Carry straight over, passing the Antelope Hotel on your right; immediately after passing the Antelope, turn left, then immediately right (round a floral traffic island), into Hospital Lane (signposted Hospital and Sherborne School). Our gates are 50 yards or so along on the right hand side, opposite where it says "SLOW" on the road.

Coming from the West on the A30 (from Yeovil), on entering Sherborne you go straight on at the first set of traffic lights, and also at the second set, passing "The Crown" pub on your left; the road then ascends (this is Greenhill) and you will pass the front of The Pheasants on your right. Immediately after, take a right turn (marked "Town Centre" in the road), then turn immediately right (round the floral traffic island) into Hospital Lane, signposted "Hospital" and "Sherborne School". Our gates are a few yards along on the right hand side, opposite where it says "SLOW" on the road.

Coming from the North on the B3145 (from Charlton Horethorne/Castle Cary/A303), come down the hill into Sherborne, reaching a T junction and traffic lights. Turn right, passing the Antelope Hotel on your right; immediately after passing the Antelope, turn left, then immediately right (round a floral traffic island), into Hospital Lane (signposted Hospital and Sherborne School). Our gates are 50 yards or so along on the right hand side, opposite where it says "SLOW" on the road.

Coming from the South on the A352 (from Dorchester), on approaching Sherborne do NOT take the right hand turn signposted Castle & Abbey (B3145/New Road), but carry on, then take the left fork (still A352, signposted Yeovil) into Hosecastles Lane. Go straight on at the lights at the "Skippers" pub, then at the T junction (next traffic lights), turn right (signposted Sherborne Town Centre & Shaftesbury/Salisbury). At the second set of traffic lights go straight on, passing "The Crown" pub on your left; the road then ascends (this is Greenhill) and you will pass the front of The Pheasants on your right. Immediately after, take a right turn (marked "Town Centre" in the road), then turn immediately right (round the floral traffic island) into Hospital Lane, signposted "Hospital" and "Sherborne School". Our gates are a few yards along on the right hand side, opposite where it says "SLOW" on the road.

On arrival by car:

It is possible to stop briefly outside, to unload, before parking. We recommend the "Coldharbour" long stay car park off the A30 (between George St and the Fire Station on the map above). There is a pedestrian exit via the "Newland" short stay car park onto Newland, just off Cheap Street/The Green. To reach the car park from The Pheasants, drive back into The Green, then onto the A30, turning right; go past the Antelope Hotel and straight ahead at the traffic lights, then turn right after the row of shops, into Coldharbour car park. At the time of writing, maximum charges are £2.00 per day in Coldharbour car park (40p for Sunday), and 40p overnight. After parking, pay for the total continuous period of parking you need (eg for two full weekdays and overnight, pay £2.00 + 40p + £2.00 = £4.40). There is no need to return to your car to pay separately for an overnight ticket etc. Three day Dorset-wide car parking vouchers are available at the Tourist Information Centre (at the top of Digby Road) for £8.


Directions for arrival by train:

Sherborne station is a 2hr 20min direct journey from London Waterloo. The railway station is marked "STN" on the bottom right of the map above. It is about a 10-15 minute walk (gently uphill!) from the station to The Pheasants, up South Street and Cheap Street, then turning left into The Green and then into Hospital Lane: we are a few yards into Hospital Lane, on the Right, and clearly signed. We normally expect and are ready for arrivals between about 4pm and 6pm, but it is usually no problem to arrive earlier or later, if you arrange this in advance with us.
